Day 3 Villaharta to Alcaracejos - 37 kms

A wonderful day on The Way. Sunshine but cooler, perfect for a long walk. Lots of up and down, a varied landscape plus dogs and farm animals. Es perfect.

We left Villaharta at 7.30 (about half an hour before full sunrise) and arrived happy and tired in Alcaracejos at 4.30 this afternoon. Nine hours walking give or take two lunch stops where we enjoyed delicious bocadillos (jamon, queso, tomate) prepared by Angel's wife and sweet juicy mandarins for dessert.

We didn't need rescuing. In fact the only near medical emergency was me hitting myself in the face with one of my own walking poles. I thought I might get a fat lip out of it but just some tingling for a while and no discernible swelling. So crises averted on all fronts.

We managed to cross both rivers without having to take off the bottom part of our pants, socks and shoes and change into sandals. The first was narrow and about mid calf height for me at deepest point. And the second was wider and probably knee height at its deepest. But in both cases we had a look around and found a stepping stone alternative upstream and downstream respectively. So a bit of an anti climax but we can understand the notes in the guide. If it had rained in the last few days our options would have been submerged and the safest way would be to follow the path and wade through.

We're not sure of distance today - the info we've read ranges between 36.5 to 39.5 kms depending on the source. Angel told us it was 38. We've settled on 37. Either way we made pretty good time. Once again no other peregrinos today though we understand there are a few people a day ahead.

The Mozarabe is fairly remote and not walked by many. The French and I love the adventure and are comfortable with the solitude but I certainly wouldn't want to walk this Camino alone. It could be very lonely indeed. We will see many more people on the paths we plan to walk in Portugal and that will be a nice contrast, though perhaps will take a little getting used to after the Mozarabe.

Here in Alcaracejos, for 30 euros we have a large comfortable room with our own bathroom - and sun bathed balcony for drying our clothes.  Now we are just hanging out for dinner. The bar doesn't start serving dinner until 8pm (the locals will eat around 10) so about half an hour to go!  A sleep in tomorrow as we have just 22 kms to walk - no need to rush.
