Merida, Espana

The French and I had no expectations about Merida. We hadn't given it a lot of thought other than as the end point of the Camino Mozarabe. We knew only that it was a large town, with historical significance from Roman times and the place where two Caminos meet - the Mozarabe and the Via de la Plata.

In our short stay, we have discovered it's a wonderful and vibrant town with its many impressive ruins providing a dramatic backdrop to day to day life. It feels truly 'alive'. We have loved every minute in Merida, and would happily return one day to see more - maybe if / when we walk the Via de la Plata.

We will check out of the Parador around noon, and spend a few more hours wandering around including the Roman amphitheatre until our 3.30 train to Huelva in south west Spain, near the border of Portugal. A new adventure.

The sun is shining as it has every day since we arrived in Spain 12 days ago.
